Dead freight
The amount to be paid by the charterer to the shipowner when he is unable to forward the stated freight quantity. After all, the obligation is to pay the entire load. The freight costs of the missing quantity of freight - in other words the space remaining onboard the vessel - is therefore dead freight. Out of courtesy, the shipowner can apply a discount, depending on the circumstances.
