Trade agreement between Japan and the EU

JEFTA (Japan-EU Free Trade Agreement) the trade agreement between Japan and the EU will come into effect as from February 1st, 2019.

Both Japan and the EU will benefit greatly from this agreement. For example, 98% of Japan’s import tariffs on goods from the EU will be abolished.
Europe will abolish, amongst other things, the import tariffs for Japanese cars. At the same time, many dairy products, including European cheeses, can be freely exported to Japan.
The agreement could increase European exports by 16 to 24 percent.
Japan is the largest trading partner of the EU in Asia, after China, and with this agreement trade will only increase.

How can you profit from the trade agreement?

In order to receive a reduction on your import duties, or even an abolishment thereof, you need to prove the preferential origin status of your cargo.

This can be done in 2 ways;

  1. Attest of origin

The Japanese shipper may issue a declaration of origin, which is usually put on the commercial invoice. An attest of origin is valid for 12 months.

  1. Importer’s knowledge

When calling upon the importer’s knowledge, the importing party is entirely responsible for being able to prove the origin of the goods by means of documentation, or by other means.
