The IMDG code (International Marine Dangerous Goods code) pertains to the shipment of hazardous cargo by sea. The United Nations, together with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) have compiled a reference book, containing all regulations regarding packaging, combined consignments, possible exemptions etc. Since hazardous goods require additional care, the shipping company must be informed of the exact details of the shipment, by means of an MSDS, then with a DGD. Based on these documents, the shipping company decides whether the goods can be accepted for transport and how the goods need to be handled. For hazardous goods by air, check IATA, for hazardous goods by road, check ADR.
